A new start to a new year

This time last year I was in a very dark place and faced what turned out to be a life changing year . I am ending 2014 ,stronger, happier and more in my own skin than ever before. Things are still odd and it’s been an odd festive period ,for those close friends and family, you know why but much love and warm hugs to all those who have been there for me this year. This is a new start to a new year!

I copied this poem into a leaving book for a friend and colleague but actually it resonates on so many levels not just raising a child.

The last year has led me on a reflective journey that is still unfurling but the words in this poem reflect a promise to myself and friends and family.

Starting this blog is part of that journey and I hope I will be joined by many travelling companions on the way. This is a new start to a new year!

If I had my child to raise over again,

I’d finger paint more, and point the finger less.

I’d do less correcting, and more connecting.

I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.

I would care to know less, and know to care more.

I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.

I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.

I’d run through more fields, and gaze at more stars.

I’d do more hugging, and less tugging.

I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.

I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.

I’d teach less about the love of power,

And more about the power of love.

It matters not whether my child is big or small,

From this day forth, I’ll cherish it all.

A new start to a new year!
